Please visit me at my new blog: Howling Dog art studio

I have decided to close this blog.

What ???

Yes, but.... I have moved all context into my other blog: Howling Dog art studio.

Why ???

Because the name Sitting on the Porch does not work for me anymore.
Because I have an Etsy store named HowlingDog art studio, and I'm on Twitter with that name and can also be found on Pinterest with this name, and this other blog I have been using is in name connected.

As both blogs are about my creativity I decided to merge them.

Hope to see you there :)

My creative juices are flowing again.

Wow, I am feeling so very much alive. I'm seeing bright colors, and looking at people, buildings, cars etc when I cycle I see the light and shade of each thing I see. I am looking through painters eyes.

Nooooooo, I have not taking a happy pill.
No, I am not on drugs, nor did I have a drink.

Since participating in this E-course I am feeling so much wonderful energy of every "classmate", it's just bouncing of my screen. Every one of them is so damn talented, I feel very humble being apart of this amazing group.
And amazing enough, everytime I login to our private Facebook page the group seems to grow in numbers. Right now our group is 414 Flyers strong.
414 people who inspire me! From all over the world. This is an amzing experience!

Because of this I have started a new Halloween painting:

The first layer is up and also went in with some details:

Not by a long shot this is finished soon but I love it that I started it. I have had a creative block for so long, I was worried if it would ever come back.

And... because I can never work on 1 project alone I started on a new Lazy Susan as well:

I am feeling energized.

Flying Lessons

I'm very excited. Starting Sunday the 16th at 16:00 p.m. PDT (where I live it will be 9 hours later so on Monday 01:00 a.m) I am taking Flying Lessons.

What?

Nooooo, not those kind. I will not be in the cockpit of an airplane high in the air.

I am participating in an E-course that hopefully will change my life.

Kelly Rae Roberts is an inspiration on living the creative life.
She now offers the last ever Flying Lessons. And it is exactly that.
To spread your creative wings, to jump of that ledge most of us are stuck on (I know I am) and fly into your creative life. To learn, to be inspired, to be inspiring to others, to grow, to be the person you are meant to be. To be the pilot of your life.

I will jump in with a 200% eagerness.

However, I will NOT get up at 01:00 a.m. monday morning.

Also, what I am looking forward to is meeting all the other "Pilots".
I have no idea how many of us there will be but I do know we are an internatonial bunch. Can't wait to bloghop or visit their sites to see the work they make, wether it will be in painting or photography or jewelry making or writing or ..... etc etc etc.

I'm packed, ready to travel...

lets FLY !!!

Lazy Susan

Last year I went to Ikea and purchased 10 Lazy Susan's with the idea to paint them with halloween images. I started with one and only worked on it in the beginning. Then other projects got my attention and the lazy susan was left in the cupboard ....forgotton and alone. Till in the first days of March of this year I told myself to finish the thing or get rid of it (basicly I needed more space in the projects area). So I did finish it and I want to show you the finished product form start to finish:

I first selected 5 of my favorite houses and put them together on a sheet to have the details with me while I painted.

Then I sanded the top of a lazy susan and gave it a background of warm yellow and orange. I then sketched the 5 houses with more or less the same distance between them.

Next in line was to add color to the houses. I never paint the houses the original color, I like to add a personal touch. And in my mind on this block (circle) the houses have these colors.

Then I added some roofs. Very essential item to have on a house. And I decided that they'd all have a low stone wall.

I then landscaped the gardens and forests behind the houses. Also the road and steps were added.
I then added a few more coats of paint to the houses and did some more layers of landscaping... added some rocks to the walls and gave it some real lawns and some trees that really stand out.
Some more detailing to the houses, and added some fences, some pumpkins, gravestones, bats and outside lights. And voila..... one painted Lazy Susan. I still need to give it a couple of protective coats of clear varnish but when that's done.... pass the ketchup please.

Victorian houses

For as long as I remember I have had a fascination with Victorian houses (the architecture that is. Most certainly NOT the interiors).
I love all the styles but my heart especially goes out to the:

Queen Anne style - for the angles, the turrets and the porches
This fine example is in Yonkers, NY and still standing beautiful to this day!

the Gothic Revivals - for the elaborate millwork and the overall storybook style
and the Second Empire style
they are just so Addams Family don't you think?

My passion for these lovely Victorian homes goes hand in hand with my other passion: Halloween. Whenever I see a "normal" Victorian house I immediately transform it in my mind to be this haunted house. In my imagination I will add a fallen shutter or two, broken windows, cobwebs, lack of paint, lurking eyes, a shadow, some ghosts and if the garden is wild enough some tombstones.

I also like to search for the history of the houses I find and get as many pictures per house as possible. So for some houses I also have details of who lived there, what they added to the house or maybe had removed. Or maybe the house was burned down or demolished or even still standing today. Some houses changed hands many a times with as many name changes. Some houses have stayed within the same family to this day (amazing when you think of it).

Over the years I have bought many books about these styles, whenever I saw a magazine with a gorgeous photo of a Victorian home I just had to have it and my computer is packed with images I downloaded over the years of beautiful victorian homes. The ones in my computer I have categorized by continent (only America, Australia and Europe), by country, by state, by city / town / village and finally per neighbourhood and street.

I have many many favorites, just when I think that THAT is the most gorgeous house I have ever seen, another pops up even more stunning. Thousands of pictures I have now.

And yes, I was forewarned by some to burn them on a CD Rom - just in case my computer would crash (aaaaaghhh). This ofcourse is a nightmare scenario and I hope this will not happen to me. Some months ago I did however burn the images I had then on a CD Rom but since I have added so many more homes that I think I have to do some more burning.
